Fan-Mail: The Thing’s Greatest Feats

*This Tokyo Comic-Con 2023, we are re-publishing another fan-mail and updating

A reader asked:

the things greatest feats

On Marvel Earth, Thing is among the strongest beings. When the Elder of the Universe, Champion, invaded Earth seeking to destroy it, he organized a boxing match against Earth’s heroes: #thor, Namor, #hulk, #thing, Wonder Man, Colossus and more.

Of all the heroes, only Thing managed to last till the third round and even cracked Champion’s ribs. Though the feat is impressive, it is difficult to quantify due to Champion’s few appearances. At the same time, we think the feat is at least Planetary-Level since the Elder can survive heat from re-entry.

Perhaps, Thing’s most popular feat is when he bench-pressed the hydraulo-press in Fantastic Four (1969) #92. The machine can bench press the planet and we assumed it can bench-press Earth. Per my calculations, Thing performed a Multi-Planetary-Level of Super-Strength.

Certainly, that is an astronomical feat that shows the hero deserves respect!

Discuss the Fantastic Four #92 Key Issue

With The Mightiest Punch! having concluded, #thing ranked Leader in the Power Hierarchy. With an impressive competition and fan-votes, Thing made it to the Top 30 in the ranking competition.

Since fans are joining the League of Heroes, we are inviting fans to collect key issues from The Mightiest Punch! Certainly, Fantastic Four (1969) #92 in the series is a key issue for the following reasons:

  • First Appearance of Napoleon G. Robberson (Skrull).
  • First Appearance of Cat-Man.

Let’s briefly discuss the issue:

The issue is important for being one of the #fantastic-four issues without a Doctor Doom appearance. Importantly, it is set almost all in space on the Skrull’s alien planet. In typical Thing fashion, the FFer is transported to the alien world in order to fight in the Great Games.

Definitely, Jack Kirby’s art is top-notch, rugged and caricatural. The heroes are rough and muscular, while the panels have colorful backgrounds and special effects. Really, targeting the fans of Kirby’s art. Certainly, this key issue is a must read for fans of the Fantastic Four or Thing.

Fan-Mail: The Thing Strongest Feat

THING DESERVES RESPECT…

One of the least celebrated heroes in Marvel history, is the lovable and IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME Thing! Partly, it is due to the popularity of #hulk and his overwhelming rage which pleases fans. Also, it is due to the decrease in popularity of the #fantastic-four, the World’s Greatest Comic Magazine.

Called Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four pioneered the Marvel way of storytelling: fun, comedy, non-stop action and societal commentary were part of Marvel’s revolutionary work when Fantastic Four debuted in the Silver Age.

However, Thing has been a crowd-favorite as his talents as a pilot, a boxing champion and his great heart! As a fighter, he simple never gives up, no matter the odds! In their Silver Age versions, we compared them in Super Power: How Hulk and Thing Match in Super Strength (Film, TV and Comics).

With the Fantastic Four set to join the #mcu it may be time to finally give the Thing his due. BIG TIME!

These days, you can catch up with the latest The Thing series from Walter Mosley and Tom Reilly.

FAVORITE SHE-HULK MOMENT…

Fantastic Four (1984) #265. Marvel Comics.

Fans LOVE She-Hulk! Her positive attitude, energetic personality and her fashion make her a fan-favorite. Importantly, as a lawyer she has defended mutants against the Mutant Registration Act, something which not even the Avengers have involved themselves in. Perhaps, the moment that has really made an impression is when She-Hulk Joins the Fantastic Four on Battleworld. A favorite moment since the heroine came into her own and was finally introduced into Marvel’s first family.

We loved that moment to give Ben a chance at introspection and for She-Hulk to truly make an impact on the people of New York. Though she is as strong as Thing, she may not be as tough. Nonetheless, her Multi-Planetary-Level Super-Strength is more than enough.

Let’s make this The Year of She-Hulk!
