A reader asked:

how to scale a superhero power level

With our recent competitions, we have pitted popular heroes from DC and Marvel against each other. Importantly, we use the Power Level Wiki to rate power levels in The Mightiest Punch!

Our theory is to apply laws of science to the fictional universes in comics. Though the feats are themselves impossible in scientific terms, we adapt our science to comics.

For example, we assume that in Superman: Doomed, Wonder Woman’s magical sword cleaves off electrons by thermionic emission against Doomsday’s tungsten-like skin. Read our explanation for the assumption below from the wiki:

In the issue, Doomsday survives Superman’s heat vision. In Superman Unchained, it is stated that Superman’s heat vision can reach 5000 degrees Celsius, the temperature of the surface of the sun. Let’s calculate the heat energy of Superman’s heat vision.

However, there are no metals on Earth that can withstand the temperature of the sun’s surface. The metal with the highest melting point is Tungsten with 3900 degrees Celsius. We will assume Superman heated Doomsday close to that temperature to defeat it. Tungsten has a specific heat capacity of 130 J/kg°C. Let’s show the results from the Omni-Calculator.

We also assume that Hulk’s skin has a high boiling point, so Superman’s heat vision generates a City-Block to City-Level heat of vaporization to burn him in DC Versus Marvel.

Hence, we assume the character’s skins are made of super dense metal alloys that render them impervious to heat, injury or stress. At the same time, we know there is no real way to explain these scientifically, they are merely assumptions that help us rate their #power-levels.

So the steps for scaling:

• Apply the laws of science to a fictional universe.
• Make assumptions and estimate the character’s durability in terms of durable materials.
• Apply a power scale to calculate the power level.
• Compare with a natural phenomenon or man-made invention for scaling.
